Johns Story..

This is John, and John is doing something simply quite amazing for our charity...

Johns Story..

'As I entered my 60th year I started to reflect on creating memories with as many as my friends as possible and raising funds for a local charity. A kind of charity bucket list as it were.

Firstly, I needed to identify a local charity that was connected to me in a very personal way. As a VP at Luctonians Rugby Club I was well aware of the work done by the wonderful volunteers at Breast Cancer Haven in Hereford, for several years the club had supported the Haven with a 'pink day' at the start of the season. Sadly, the Haven has closed but the volunteers have started a new charity called Herefordshire Breast Cancer Support Group. I was delighted by the help and support offered by this fledgling charity, so this is who I am raising money for and any support is not only welcome but very much needed.

So the plan is simple, six major 'events' over the six months leading up to my 60th birthday. All of them relating to the number 6 and involving as many friends as possible, hopefully to raise as much money as possible for Herefordshire Breast Cancer Support Group.

On June 1st I will be attempting to get up and down Ben Nevis in under 6 hours, for some reason carrying 6lbs of Herefordshire finest potatoes. One of the people joining me will be my oldest friend Dave, grew up in London together and we have known each other for over 40 years and we have shared so many adventures together. Also joining us will be two local friends, James and Neil.

On July the 3rd, weather permitting, I will be undertaking 60 holes of golf at Leominster Golf Club. I belong to a golf society and members of the Club and ours golfing society will be joining me for some time during the day. Gordon, Mike, Paul and Stewart have already agreed to support me.

The third challenge is a 60 mile cycle ride with both my brothers-in-law, friends from Luctonians Cycle Club and two colleagues from the Bishop of Hereford's Bluecoat School where I work. The route will be around North Herefordshire and weather permitting will take place on a single day between August 2nd and 5th.

September sees the most personally daunting activity, the Blenheim Palace Triathlon on 11th September. The aim is to complete the course in under 180 minutes. Tom from BHBS and Owain my brother-in-law will be joining me for this punishing but picturesque adventure.

As yet there are no firm plans for October and November but depending on dates there will be a gorge walking experience to really crank up the adrenaline. Tucked away in the mountainous Brecon Beacon countryside, myself and some hardy friends will be tackling some geographical marvels on a six hour and 6 waterfall route.

Finally something more sedate, from June - November I intend to visit 60 different Herefordshire pubs. Just a personal goal and the opportunity to meet more friends.

At the end of it all is my 60th birthday in December, by then I hope to have many wonderful memories with friends and family. However, more importantly I would like to have raised as much as possible for the Herefordshire Breast Cancer Support Group and the dedicated volunteers that help and support those in need, in our local community"

Any donations and support for John are very greatly received:
